Opel Antara model year 2011: our road test

Outside has changed little, very little, but the update of the Opel Antara mid-career, presented in recent days in Scotland as model year 2011, is one of those cases where there is wrong, stopping at appearances. Big. The mid-size SUV from the German, as we have been experimenting during our road test has changed profoundly under the skin.

So much so that, as behind the scenes by the project, the 2011 model year from now you can find many solutions for next-generation model. Also to study it thoroughly, it is hard to see what has changed in terms of design than the original all'Antara: The only new features are all in the front and consist essentially in the new internal structure of clusters in the chrome strip that runs through the mask, now split in the bumper design, the lower air intake, now made even more apparent, and finally in the new fog lights.

That's it. The exact opposite, the engine range of the Antara MY 2011 is unprecedented. Two units available today, after the disappearance of the 3.2 V6 petrol, certainly not necessary in terms of trade volumes: The SUV you can choose a new 2.4 Ecotec four-cylinder petrol engine which, while maintaining a capacity similar to its predecessor (we has increased from 2405 to 2384 cc) is quite unprecedented and represents a great progress in terms of power (increased from 140 to 167 hp), torque (up from 220 to 230 Nm), as well as fuel consumption and emissions.

But the main attraction is of course the all-new 2.2 CDTI. Opel Antara model year 2011: we road test the drive diesel, available with 163 hp and 350 Nm or 184 hp and 400 Nm, replaces the old 2.0 (which was available as 127 or 150 hp) and paves the way a new generation of four-cylinder diesel, with the signing of the boys of GM Powertrain in Turin.

After this first engine, designed only to SUVs in the group (Antara, Captiva, Cadillac SRX, and perhaps others), comes a second unit for mid-size (there are rumors of a 1.6) is to replace the old 1.7 that even today many of the mans Recent models of the house. But let's look at all aspects of order with the new Antara.

Open the door and get comfy on the driver's seat is found naturally very high driving position of the original model. And the aesthetics of the various elements that surround the driver does not deviate too dall'Antara 2007. Only a few details, such as the connection between the center console and tunnel, or the gear lever has been modified.

That, after all, was natural enough, given that nothing was missing the driver's seat. Of course, the instrument panel rather anonymous and not be the best of life, but otherwise it is hard to complain: the electric seat adjustments part of the specimens tested by us, ergonomic controls, virtually flawless, all contribute to the good of overall comfort.

The only criticism concerns the console on this Antara 2011, the design was not adapted to the new Insignia Meriva and Astra, and the set is therefore a bit 'dated. In terms of materials, finishing the car revealed a more than good, especially in the linings of the upper part of the bridge, from the point of view of the assembly can be seen here and there some small flaw.

Particularly pleasing chrome surrounds the instruments and air vents, the treatment of the gear lever and the satin lining surrounding the console and the area of exchange. Also on the habitability SUV Opel has confirmed the good showed dall'Antara of 2007 in front of course there are problems, but also gives the right rear seat comfort.

And thanks to its almost completely flat, not even the fifth passenger is called a special sacrifices, also because of the fact that the transmission tunnel runs underneath the floor pan. The generous size of the car body, 460 cm long, are also the basis of the generous boot capacity, which has a minimum capacity of 420 liters.

As I wrote at the beginning, however, the real (and sometimes unexpected) surprises dell'Antara 2011 came from the dynamic chapter. Away from the microphones, engineers project leaders have recognized the limitations of the model born in 2007, partly co-responsible for commercial outcomes are not always exciting.

And on those areas are occurring. The goal? Show preview to customers of a restyling of the progress that will make the model with the alternation of generations. The main protagonist in this field is the new diesel engine. In Scotland two days we had the opportunity to try the 184-hp 2.2-powerstep in the most powerful in combination with single-wheel drive, and both alternatives to transmission, manual automatism, united by having six- .

This unit, which may not be sold as commercial as 163 hp, offers the best you can ask a latest-generation turbodiesel. Two features that have particularly surprised: the impressive silent operation and the complete lack of turbo lag. The four-cylinder revs at a steady pace, and does so by giving a mighty push, since very low regimes.

All in a muffled atmosphere, with a noise level quite comparable with that of a petrol silent. A motorone. To accommodate the unit, may be two shows, both overall good: The manual has a good handling of the lever (if it were not for that ... arm), but suffers from a friction-even light-attack has a little ' too abrupt, while the automatic, very comfortable, not so fast.

But then the Antara is not the car they are measured in tenths of a second of the change ... The work of refining the model has affected not just the chassis, which was reviewed in depth and is now able to ensure driving significantly more pleasant and responsive, always within the dynamic limits of a pattern of high mass and high center of gravity as a mid-class SUV.

Progress is evident, however: the little rolla Antara, shows a considerable estate when there is approaching the limit and driving is surprisingly pleasant. The price of these virtues is a certain stiffness of the rear axle, transmitting some shaking too much to those seated behind. "Guilt" in the tires from 19 "to be said, since with 18" wheels better absorption so noticeable.

A frame so genuine and sincere, we would have liked to see a combined steering accuracy: The command is probably more direct than before, but it is still a little 'empty' to small angles. The new Antara model year 2011 has a whole range of Euro 5 engines with fuel consumption and emissions values ranging from 6.3 l/100 km and 167 g / km of CO2 of 163 hp 2.2 CDTI with manual transmission and front wheel drive, and 9 , 3 l/100 km and 219 g / km for the 2.4 petrol with automatic transmission and four wheel drive.

The CDTI 184 hp we tested, with the only available all-wheel drive, requires 6.6 l/100 km of diesel with manual transmission and 7.8 with the automatic. The approved CO2 emissions amounted respectively to 175 and 205 g / km.
