25 Hours of Magione 5 ° Energy Saving Race 2011: Peugeot 308 1.6 HDI shotgun and RCZ 2.0 HDI

It took place on the circuit of the 5th edition of the Mansfield 25 hours Energy Saving Race, competition for consumer vehicles. This year, as in the 2010 edition, we were able to participate thanks to the hospitality of the Mondadori and colleagues with support from Peugeot Italy, which was well worth the 1 st and 2 nd place overall at the disposal of the cars: Peugeot 308 1.6 HDI FAP and RCZ SW 2.0 HDI FAP.

The regulation, which is identical to 2010, provided 25-hour race on the track with six stops on. A mathematical factor was calculated taking into account the actual consumption, miles traveled in 25 hours and a series of technical data of the car such as power, weight and power consumption reported.

The 308 1.6 HDi FAP 109 bhp won the overall classification average of 65.267 km / h, with a consumption of 4.73 l/100 km, compared to a declared in the combined cycle of 4.8 l/100 km covering 618 laps track for a total of 1569.111 km (including stops), but the real surprise was the second place overall in the RCZ sport with the 2.0 HDI FAP 163 bhp, reached the finish line at an average of 66.314 km / h with a consumption of 5.05 l/100 km, compared to a reported 5.3 l/100 km covering 628 laps for a total of 1594.184 km.

Among the 19 starters this year, as well as models that are common, as Kia Come, DS3 Citroen, BMW 1 Series, Honda CR-Z, Mini One, Alfa Romeo and Smart ForTwo diesel (author of the best absolute consumption with 25.73 km / l), we must remember the début of a competing electric car, the Citroen C-Zero: for you have been set specific parameters for the regulation and charging stops and the best result obtained on the track was to 150 mileage on a single charge, while not taking advantage of virtually no opportunity to recover energy during braking.

Like last year, the changing climatic conditions have put a strain on drivers who alternate driving had to find the right balance between speed and fuel consumption between the curbs of the track umbra. Saturday from 11.00 until 12.00 on Sunday, the cars continued their race without major technical problems and a few off the road due to wet asphalt and driving "special" in place to get the best fuel consumption.

The strategies set by the team have led some to prefer moderately fast times, but through long stretches of the route issue or in neutral, while others have chosen a slower pace, using the thrusters to maximum torque. The undersigned has been able to drive the two Peugeot until the dawn, through the rain and dry with clear indications about the time decided to maintain the "wall".

RCZ got on at a filling, there was barely time to adjust the seat and steering wheel before getting on track now, with the wet asphalt and a time to be fulfilled: tires 18 "inflated to pressures higher than the standard to improve smoothness, made the rear axle, particularly "lively", calling into question the wet ESP in some places.

Dopo speso a few laps take these measures rispettare a half I started on schedule, even if the computer is not on board as can be seen i consumi prestabiliti. Only after several laps and having very specific references I started to lower power consumption, making the couple of two liters and never go below the 4th gear, at least the next few schemes but at the same time, never drop below 50 km / h.

Mindful of the 2010, I thought I could use references taken with the 207 HDI 99g winners of last year, but I became quickly aware that the chassis and engine speed and mileage allowed RCZ curve very different, at the expense of a lower smoothness tracts in issue and in neutral locations.

After 2 hours spent in sports interior of RCZ, was now the turn of the 308 SW HDI and was not immediately easy to get used to the differences: fewer restraints seats, driving position and more tourists, 1.6 engine with less torque, but at the same time, tires 16 "sliding a lot more to take advantage of the inertia of the car, thanks to the asphalt of the track now dry.

The last hours were spent traveling with the RCZ in the traffic of other competitors, keeping as much as possible the concentration and a steady rate, while the onboard computer indicated average consumption lower and lower. Just traffic has made the latter stages of the most difficult race, with competitors to control faster and slower than others to be overcome only in the most favorable, resisting the temptation to use the power of the engines.
