Audi Space Frame: lightweight lens

"Every new Audi will be lighter than its predecessor." With this primary objective, the Ingolstadt brand aims to make a difference in the market in the coming years. A journey that began back in 1994 with the rest of the flagship A8 then continued over the years and who saw the bodies in aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) at the heart of this innovative process.

Since 1994 Audi has produced about 550mila Asf vehicles with bodywork at its best now represented by models such as the flagship A8 and R8 super sports car, not forgetting of course the TT coupe (the new version weighs 90 kg less than the previous year) The A7 Sportback and the new A6 (also 80 kg lighter) that use steel bodies with a high percentage of aluminum.

The next step, they know from Ingolstadt, is to transform the multi-material philosophy ASF Space Frame, which will require a combination of aluminum, steel and fiber reinforced plastic lightweight, assigning "the right material, right place, for the function right." This particular task will be entrusted to the Centre in Neckarsulm in light construction which employs about 50 experts in close collaboration with Lamborghini, where lightweight materials are at home (see the latest Aventador), and in 2010 was extended a research center and research on carbon fiber reinforced plastics.

In addition to the new Audi are also studying new materials joining technology to unite firmly as steel, aluminum and fiber reinforced plastics. From the adhesive layer over that to seal the connection area, prevents the risk of contact corrosion caused by plastic materials reinforced with carbon fiber, the friction welding that enables the joining of steel and aluminum.
