The Federal Council vote on Friday (18/03/2011) from the introduction of smaller motorcycle license plates. The minimum size of number plates will be reduced to 18 × 20 cm, as is already common in other EU countries such as Austria, Italy or France. The Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) welcomes the reduction of the indicator, which had been suggested from both the motorcycle and classic car from the scene.

The Federal Highway Research Institute (BAST) has investigated the safety not affected, and the visibility of the indicator is still valid. Also supports the recommendation of the AvD Transport Committee, the introduction of the smaller plate is preferable. The entry into force of the Regulation amending the Vehicle Registration Regulation (FZV) was originally 1 June 2011 planned.

Now the force on the day after the announcement to come into force and thus for most motorcycle riders in time for the start of the season. Are currently pending in Germany about 3.7 million motorcycles, of which about a million a season mark. The AvD points out that there is an additional new option to use the small mark at least 18 × 20 centimeters.

This is not mandatory. Existing features can be used to continue naturally. Following the amendment of the Vehicle Registration Regulation now also self-illuminating rear registration plate shall be permitted. The previously existing exemption should be adopted. (Ampnet / jri)
