Sonderwagenbau 60 years and traveled by car

With four Bullis Volkswagen looks at the Techno Classica in Essen (30.3.-4.3.2011) in Hall 7 back on 60 years of camping. Marked the beginning of 1951, the Campingbox the VW bus. No less old is the Sonderwagenbau at Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge (VWN), the same is applicable in food recalls. Whether fire, police, ambulances, an early result in our own service center with specialty vehicles.

One of them is unrestored and in a barn found "Sanka" from 1956. Germany was in the early 1950s until the beginning of mass motorization. At the time, to 100 Germans were just a car. It was then a British officer who ordered from Westfalia a residential facility for his Volkswagen van - the Campingbox.

1957, the Volkswagen "VW campers," as he was now called, into their own program. There was the expansion of it continues to Westfalia. Two years later, the 1000th caravan was completed. In the summer of 1967, Volkswagen presented the new generation of the transporter. Above all, the Americans were enthusiastic about compact for the recreational vehicle.

1969 left the 50 000th camper the tape, two years later the 100 000th copy. As of 1976 there was the "Berlin", which is already anticipating the floor plan of today's California. In the third generation model was Westfalia fitters number one. The outstanding VW camping vehicle of the 1980s is the Joker - but he was expensive.

With a thick red pencil and a much larger scale production in view, therefore, the equipment has been slimmed down in 1988 by Volkswagen. That brought a starting price of 900 marks then 39 and a new name: California. In the summer of 1990, Volkswagen presented the T4 and then took leave of the rear engine.

Two years after the start of the California Coach (short wheelbase) and the long variants California Tour California Club and came with different floor plans on the market. 1994 was followed by a third, mid-height roof. Simultaneously launched the California Exclusive. With limited introduction of T5 in 2002, the California version with the most built-up roof, then took over the production of VW in Hanover itself a high-roof version was launched in 2005 into the program.

The built of aluminum sandwich panels furniture of the new generation had a very modern, with curved shapes and loose from the previously known "carpenter solutions." Still, the striking development of the ambulances. Thus, the first vehicles to primary care do not work less rustic, just like the Campingbox.

Gives a glimpse of the unrestored "Sanka" in 1956, of its innards, although deprived, but still shows well, was saved with simple means comparable to what a good ten years after the Second World War life. (Ampnet / jri)
