Shanghai 2011: Audi A3 shows tron E-Concept

Audi is presenting its technology at the Auto Shanghai study A3 tron E-Concept. The four-seater saloon combines all the technological know-how of the brand - from further optimization of the MMI operating system on the high-end infotainment to its engine. The plug-in hybrid makes with its two units and the lithium-ion batteries that store enough energy to drive up to 54 km of pure electric, with high efficiency in handling fuel.

The Audi A3 e-tron concept measures 4.44 meters in length and 1.84 meters in width, but only 1.39 meters in height. The single-frame grille is integrated into the plastic bug. Its frame is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), the transverse, three-dimensional aluminum fins visually underline the breadth of the show cars.

The lights add on to the beveled upper corners of the single frames. This transition is the starting point for the strikingly pronounced hood lines. The lights present a new evolutionary step in LED technology. Externally there are wide, a line of them gives them float. On the front spoiler is a continuous, enclosed by a metal clasp air intake, which is also made of CFRP.

The spoiler integrated into a splitter that increases downforce on the front axle. Strongly flared fenders hint at the power of the engine. Two out sharply crafted lines accentuate the edge. The mirrors, made of aluminum and carbon fiber, sitting on the window channel strips. The door handles with brushed aluminum clips are flush injected, when the driver touches them, they drive out of electricity.

The wheelbase of 2.63 meters provides the rear passengers on the two individual seats, comfortable leg room. The front sport seats with prominent cheeks build lean and elegant. The instrument panel has a wide application in solid aluminum bar, which is formed in three dimensions and integrated control functions.

On the center console, four large, round air vents covered in jet design in the eye. Behind the compact, flat-bottomed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel is a novel display concept. An additional tool to visualize the status of the battery. Between the large round watch is the eight-inch display of driver information system (FIS).

On the console of the central tunnel is the front panel of the multimedia system MMI. As a classic saloon brings the A3 Concept E-tron with a large trunk of 410 liters and a low sill. The A3 e-tron Concept is designed as a plug-in hybrid and is powered by two motors. By a 155 kW / 211 hp 1.4 TFSI four cylinder with turbocharging and gasoline direct injection, as well as by an electric engine with 20 kW / 27 hp.

The overall performance of the system is 175 kW / 238 PS. The combination of the two engines accelerate the step-back in 6.8 seconds to 100 and further to 231 km / h. Consumption is 2.2 l/100km on average. The heart of the E-tron Concept A3 are the lithium ion batteries behind the rear seats.

With a capacity of twelve kWh in pure electric operating range of 54 km is possible.
