Traffic accidents: one death every two hours, and 70% of Italians do not comply with the Code

The data is chilling: Every two hours someone dies on Italian roads. Suffice it to say that the victims in 2009 were 4,237, 1,200 of them under 30 years. Not to mention a million injured and 20 thousand new paraplegics. Four-fifths of the casualties are due to human error but, above all, a failure to comply with the rules of the road.

With recent changes to the rules of the road, there are now heavier sanctions for those who cause accidents committing serious offenses. But "the controls, however, were still not enough - the president of thundering Foundation Ania, Sandro Salvati - and, especially, lacks the certainty of punishment.

This is an untenable situation that we can no longer tolerate. It 's time that we've got to change the Penal Code by introducing a case law that regulates the traffic offense, especially when it causes death or serious injuries. " A recent survey Ispo showed that 58% of respondents believe that when you're behind the wheel did not respect the highway code.

But the violation of the TOS is widespread: over 70% of motorists said to break the rules, though it is aware (he said more than 80% of respondents) of the risks and social and economic consequences of road accidents. To all this there is also an aggravating factor highlighted by the statistical Ispo: 74% of the Italian states to comply more closely the rules of the road when you are abroad.

But why break the rules of the CDS? Among the reasons, according to respondents in the first place there is an underestimation of risk (91%) are considered weak and ineffective controls (72%) and the penalties are considered not so heavy as to be frightening and above all, not implemented (70%).

More than a third of Italians (35% of the sample) believed then that the violations are also due to the lack of clarity in the rules of the road.
