Volvo: New York in the new S60 and XC60 R-Design

New York Motor Show, which opens to visitors these days almost simultaneously with the Shanghai Motor Show, Volvo presents the 2012 version of the S60 sport sedan and XC60 crossover, both developed in the recent formula R-Design, which is proving popular Germany, Great Britain and overseas: high performance engines mated to a chassis that can support more effectively the more markedly shown by the sports package R-Design, in terms of aesthetics, alloy wheels (18 ") of new design ; split tailpipes and chrome, a sporty new trim, and inside a racing touch to the steering wheel, pedals and shift knob.

These are the prices reported for the U.S. since the end of next summer, that is, when both models will debut in the lists of the House: $ 42,275 for the S60 R-Design (equivalent to 29 000 €) and $ 43,150 for the XC60 R-Design (€ 30,000). The engine chosen for the presentation is the Volvo T6 turbocharged six-cylinder in-line, which now delivers 325 hp and 354 Nm of torque (already available at 3000 rpm), paired with six-speed gearbox automaticoGeartronic.

The other new techniques relate to the frame. In R-Design Configuration In fact, it is equipped with a classic bar domes for the front: a simple and effective method to stiffen the structure of the car body and improve steering response. The rear is fitted with monotube shock absorbers, which, unlike the twin-tube shock absorber system (such as those mounted on board the S60 T6) provides compression and rebound through the same valve.

Speaking of trim, the front springs and rear were lowered by 15 mm and stiffened by 15% compared with the S60 T6, with attacks and arms too stiff. The envelope has the Traction Control Corner (further refinement of the stability and traction control), which in turn slows the wheel and gives more couples the inner to the outer wheel to limit the tendency to understeer, the Advanced Stability Control ("warning" any tendency to slip ahead of the car) and Engine Drag Control, which helps keep the adereza the wheels when running on slippery ground.

On the security front, it includes the sensing device Full Auto Brake pedestrians (consisting of radar unit built into the front grille connected to a camera located in front of the inside rear view mirror and a control center), to "see "obstacles and to determine in real time the distance and up to 22 km / h, can avoid pedestrians, while at higher speeds to help reduce the severity of impact.
