Clermont Ferrand, Michelin, Nunc est Bibendum

From Clermont Ferrand is coming to town along the A711 or D76, to the large junction with the E11 - N89, at the point where the Rue Des Ronziéres Turn south, not too far from the major highway Méridienne. It 's a question that follow it supported by small villages, one gets the impression of entering a hospitable mountain village in northern Italy, those where there is no traffic, but only shops, workshops, food, and a few clothes hanging to dry from the windows of the houses of small brick building, with private backyard.

On the horizon we see lost large tracts of countryside that begin immediately after the first buildings that lie in our path, but then made a couple of corners, as if we were just outside the entrance of Las Vegas in the desert, we begin to see the ' impressive town of Clermont-Ferrand.

Can be glimpsed from a distance, the summit of a crater of an extinct volcano on the side with large antennas for television and two large spikes that blacks are binding on the landscape, like two sharp eyes of a castle belonging to another was. It is the latter, the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, 15 centuries of life, also recently restored, a historic symbol of the city.

A Clermont neighborhoods of the historic center, seen during the day felt like a stage set of a period film set in a bizarre medieval times with cars. The shops are there for centuries, some are said to house the same business for generations. The streets are lost in a series of ups and downs paved, from which it is impossible to leave the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption out of his sight, unless you go to intern in one of the many gardens of historic buildings house taverns, pubs, bars and ornaments halls of the nineteenth century wink to the most beautiful ancient cities of Italy.

The imagination runs alone, and for a moment it is impossible not to imagine these neighborhoods populated by people of centuries ago, so how is your mouth water to think about how beautiful Clermont now flooded by tourists in a cool Saturday night in summer . Among the capitals, arches eroded by time and place of medallions of famous generals in ancient Rome, the city is colored posters of underground clubs, signs of ice cream shops, newsstands and tobacco shops, and look good, turning a corner at any point you are in, it also locates some pizza or fast food which is now so chic East in the modernization of a large tourist city.

Nevertheless, the city points are offered for tasting of wines and cheeses, less experienced connoisseurs of French cities would expect to find wine barrels and pieces of cheese that still smells of farm country between the dim lights of the beautiful roads, but Clermont Ferrand no, it is not, and soon becomes a habit out of his mind in these postcards from Italian crib.

For a good glass of wine premiere class or for a touch of Gaperon, cow's milk cheese with garlic white crust, typical of the place, just sit in a restaurant or even a piano bar, the kind where it is not difficult to meet the tourist Japanese with the camera, and the can of Coca Cola at the table.

From here, while you'll probably be wondering why the home of cinema there is no trace of movie theaters or screening rooms for long time (you should even notice just a few theater for comedy copyright), there is time to remove a curiosity on the local economy, and see how important the name of Michelin to the identity of Clermont-Ferrand.

In fact, impossible not to have seen the presence of Bibendum, better known to us as "Michelin Man", the streets of Clermont-Ferrand. A sign, a giant, a plastic doll, the Michelin Man (we still call it that) lives in Clermont as Mickey Mouse lives the theme parks of Walt Disney. And not too far from the city center lies the industrial area with the Michelin factory, located on the side of manufacturing, industrial and illustrious stage of the Museum, which takes its name, and last season was host of the title of Champion of France with the local rugby team.

The stadium, which this year celebrates a century of life since it was inaugurated by Marcel Michelin in 1911 as a field for sports and for the first rugby league in the city, was restored in 2006. From the outside you notice how the two rings are close to the grandstand area, and the roof structure of the stands and raising pillars and entrance gates to the system's vaguely reminiscent of sports stadiums and most of the English stage in the refurbished end of last century, which in Italy we have some examples with the rebuilt stadium for the World Cup in 1990.

In front of the entrance to the curve of the stadium, the tire is exposed to the world's largest, totem tourism welcomes us to visit the Museum Michelin advised the Museum visitors view the city's wealth of historical information it contains. A guided tour inside us through the history of the Michelin for images, videos and words.

And it is a story of ingenuity, perfection and civil commitment for the territory: the history of the Michelin tire goes hand in hand with the history of industrialization and communication in the country, since a large tire manufacturer has also worked with dedication to development of road network and information network for motorists and all citizens who have been embraced by the rapid globalization process industry in Europe and worldwide.

Trivia: Bibendum (the Michelin Man) is from an old advertisement for a manufacturer of German beer made during the first commercial exhibition in Clermont Ferrant. A mug of beer from pupazzone contested symbol of the Michelin was sponsored as "nunc est Bibendum", "now you must drink, from there the birth of the name of what today is called a case par excellence of the symbols of a major industry history.
