Le Mans 2011: Tenth victory for Audi

Audi has won one of the most exciting and dramatic 24-hour race of Le Mans history. Marcel Fässler (Switzerland), André Lotterer (Germany) and Benoit Treluyer (France), runner-up last year overtook yesterday with the R18 TDI before more than 250 000 spectators the tenth overall Le Mans victory for the brand.

The three-Wekrs Peugeot were the runners-up four, where the car came with the number "9" by Simon Pagenaud, Sébastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy few seconds behind the Audi to the finish. After Audi lost in the first third of the race Audi R18 TDI by two of his accident, all hopes were resting on the vehicle with the number "2", which had secured the pole position in qualifying.

16 hours had Fässler, Lotterer and Treluyer alone against the three factory Peugeot fight that left nothing untried to make Audi a victory in dispute. On Sunday morning, the four fastest cars were still within a few seconds at the top of the field. Again and again the lead changed also depends on the different strategies.

Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller survived extremely severe accidents in the first third of the race unhurt. McNish in the Audi R18 TDI was with the number "3" taken shortly before the end of the first hour the lead when he was hit in the stretch, "La Chappelle" of a GT car at a speed of 170 on the left rear wheel.

The R18 TDI spun off the track, traveling at high force against the barriers and overturned. The one-piece carbon-fiber monocoque of the Audi R18 TDI was the impact was. McNish was able to emerge from the wreck unharmed and return to a routine examination in the hospital on the race track.

An even greater protection angel had Mike Rockenfeller, lying just 23 when he came second in the fastest clock section near 300 km / h was also touched by a GT car on the left rear wheel. The Audi R18 TDI turned left and crashed with 270 km / h against the guardrails on the directions for "Indianapolis" curve.

Rockefeller could get out of the wreck. Last year's winner was a precautionary measure in the hospital overnight, this could leave on Sunday morning, but again. (Ampnet / jri)
