Volvo: a system to avoid accidents with animals

Volvo is developing a system that can prevent accidents involving animals. Since the number of vehicles in the coming years, inspired by the City Safety and Pedestrian Detection technology already available on Volvo cars, from sensors that can recognize obstacles and pedestrians and activate the brakes automatically.

Through a radar and an infrared camera system can work even in very poor visibility and light, there may be situations where confrontations with animals on the road, especially with special climatic conditions. Volvo engineers are testing the system optimized for use on rural roads: in the case of excessive vehicle speed, the system will activate the braking system by reducing the speed of impact and consequences of the accident.

The engineers are also studying the behavior of different types of animals, in order to collect data and calibrate the sensors of the car accordingly.
