Carbon fiber cars cheapest thanks to ... golf

The carbon fiber is expected to be increasingly present in the car of the future. E '50% lighter than steel and 30% compared to aluminum, the same time ensuring the good qualities of resistance. The problem of carbon fiber? The cost. Making high-quality components in the material constitutes a significant increase in the price of the finished product.

Despite the significant investments to deal with, there are many manufacturers who have chosen the carbon fiber models arriving, in 2013 BMW will present the new electric city car built on a chassis made of carbon fiber and produced at a rate of 30,000 units a year . Daimler has initiated a joint venture with Japanese company Toray Industries to produce carbon fiber components for the new Mercedes SL 2012.

The most innovative car brand on the construction of carbon fiber components, however, is the Lamborghini of strong large sums provided by Volkswagen, the manufacturer of Sant'Agata Bolognese has become the laboratory for the development of new lightweight materials. After it has teamed with the Boeing aircraft company, the brand founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini has announced a new partnership with Callaway, a leading manufacturer of golf clubs.

The joint venture between Lamborghini and Callaway has already given fruits: The Sixth Element concept car presented at the last Paris Motor Show was built largely with composite forged. Thanks to this innovative material, the balance of power has stopped just 999 kg. According to Paul Feraboli, professor of aerospace materials at the University of Washington and director of Advanced Composite Structure Laboratory (born in 2009 thanks to a donation of $ 1 million made by Lamborghini), the next will see extensive use of forged composites.
