In January 2011 German roads 241 people are killed. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), according to preliminary results, further reported that 24 percent more than in January 2010. The number of injured has increased by 6.8 percent to around 22 000 people. Overall, the police had to take around 177 800 road traffic accidents in January 2011 (-8.4%).
While the number of accidents involving personal injury have increased compared with January 2010 by 7.8 percent to about 16 900, the number of accidents has decreased with only material damage by 9.9 percent to 160 900th The number of deaths rose in January 2011 in twelve states over the same month last year.
In Lower Saxony alone 17 people were killed over the previous year (+71%). In Brandenburg, the number of deaths increased from four to 13 and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from four to ten.
