The car of the future will not be developed by the car manufacturers alone. Even all car manufacturers would be together to cope with it, for in the future, it's not about the vehicle on four wheels alone, but a new, holistic approach to climate-friendly mobility, if possible, without dependence on politically specific energy.
We are looking for nothing less than a transformation of energy for transport. Audi will now share with the "Audi Balanced Mobility" an example of the many cross-disciplinary thinking. The view to the partners of this initiative demonstrates just how complex the answers to the questions on the mobility of the future: After three years of research and preparation Audi is now launching the implementation of its E-Gas Project with the Stuttgart-based company Solarfuel GmbH, the center for Hydrogen Research (ZSW) in Stuttgart, the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy and Wind Energy Systems Technology (IWES) in Kassel and the energy EWE AG.
The idea behind this project sounds simple: excess wind and solar energy is stored by first gaining from water by electrolysis the hydrogen. Can either be used directly in fuel cells or when the hydrogen combines with carbon from the carbon dioxide, can be artificial natural gas (methane) produced.
This methane can operate gas-powered cars. It can happen even on the existing natural gas and grid electricity and delivered to households and power plants. To our already large natural gas system includes huge underground reservoir from which Germany can supply up to three months. Just the questions of the networks and storage are the ones that deal in the current debate about the transformation of energy experts.
We are looking for ways to transport the north with wind generated electricity to the consumers. Here, with the artificial gas to a path that today is already passable. The networks and storage are available, the construction of new gas pipelines would have fewer conflicts with concerned citizens conjure up as new power lines.
So we can see if this path is taken. Audi and its partners in any event make the necessary steps to lead the technical proof of the feasibility of the concept. The first major component of the project financed Audi together with a regional energy supplier. It is a wind power plant off the North Sea coast, the year is more than 50 gigawatts of electricity supply, as much as a mid-size city consumed.
The second component of the project is the e-gas plant, hydrogen and methane is produced in the industrially useful scale. A first pilot plant could present the partners are now in Hamburg already. The groundbreaking for the larger plant is scheduled for July this year. This e-gas system is coupled with a waste-biogas plant from which they can obtain the concentrated carbon dioxide.
Each year, they will gain about 1,000 tons of e-gas and bind 2800 tons of carbon dioxide. The electricity from wind power and methane from the plant can be in the first phase for about 2,500 cars supply of energy. A run with E-gas natural gas car in the compact car emits per kilometer, less than 30 grams of carbon dioxide when you look at the CO2 emissions from the source to the wheel.
Here, the emissions for the construction of wind turbines and the electronic throttle system, are already included. Audi's development head Michael Dick. The first e rolling-gas product now, Dick announced an A3, which will be offered starting in 2013 with the model name TCNG (T for Turbo and CNG Compressed Natural Gas or natural gas). The Audi A1 e-tron, a pure battery-electric car, is included on the product.
