The intention of the House Ethics BMW 5 Series GT would be an alternative to crossover wagon and going crazy on the market. Nearly two years after its debut - it was November 2009 - BMW takes stock of the situation and admits that sales of this model, at least in the North American market, has not delivered the expected results in the Monaco of Bavaria.
"The disappointment is that we thought that many drivers of our 5-series wagon would have chosen a GT - said Jim O'Donnell, managing director of BMW in North America - but in fact it did not happen. Instead we have lost customers promoting competition above all rivals like Mercedes-Benz.
" What's more it seems that the same 5-Series GT has complicated life for elder sister 7 Series eroding share of customers. "The GT has attracted customers to the 7 Series and 5 Series car but not car owners wagon as we assumed." In Florida, for example 10% of the 7 Series owners have replaced their cars with a 5 Series GT uses the same platform construction but has a starting price of $ 57,375 (535th GT), compared with $ 71,525 of Series 7 740th.
When it was launched on the American market the top of the house they expected volumes in the range between 4 thousand and 8 thousand units. In 2010, however, the 5 Series Gt has sold only 2,848 copies and even 720 in the first four months of this year. What causes this flop? Basically a design that has not fully convinced or won over American audiences, attracted by the little hatchback cars.
BMW now you just have to roll up their sleeves and pull out of the hat as soon as possible a car capable of winning the driver from overseas to not leave the field open to strong competition from Mercedes. To do this, however, O'Donnell has acknowledged the same, it will take time.
