Chevrolet Aveo: our road test

After avervene discussed in detail, we propose our test drive of the Chevrolet Aveo that we got to ride on a sunny day on the Swiss roads. The car has a nice design, sporty look by: the headlights and the grille between them including not let pass unnoticed, while stressing the family feeling with the other cars in the house.

Interesting side with pronounced wheel arches and the rear door handle "drowned" in the upper portion of the frame and rear window. Also managed the queue, although no particular stylistic impulses, it is orderly and proportionate to the rest of the car. We've got to try the car with both body variants and all the engines that will be important in Italy and which, together with the prices and allocations, we have already reported this morning.

We tell you now that we liked the hatchback more, more successful both in terms of aesthetics and on that dynamic. The differences are not with the sedan nor as abysmal in terms of performance or handling. But the 5-door there appeared generally more balanced, more "alive" in his hands and in line with the expectations of the Italian customer.

No coincidence that people are aware that the Chevrolet Aveo, in terms of sales, will be preferred to 90% with body hatchback. Chevy it would deliver about 8,000 by the end of this year and then consistently raise the volume with the arrival of diesel and LPG bi-fuel. Sitting behind the steering wheel is easy to find the right driving position: the seat, where applicable, is height-adjustable steering column while the crown has a good hike in just enough depth and height.

The seats are very good profile with a padded seat in the central portion; softer padding the sides, however, sufficient to ensure adequate control during cornering. The design of the bridge, almost vertical is very original and successful: everything is within reach and easy to read while on the ground of plastic two-tone gives a more refined environment.

The plastics used are rather thick and stiff, but give the idea of solidity that you would expect from cars in this class. Less well that instead of plastic door panels have also too much and, moreover, not of good quality: it is less processed and more subtle than that of the board and unfortunately lowers the overall average.

In the segment outputs are much higher. But it must be said that these prices, it is difficult to ask for more. Moreover, the quality of materials and assemblies is much higher than the outgoing model. A ergonomics the car does not denounce particular defects, everything is easily accessible and within reach.

To be hidden is instead the button to turn off the ESP, located on the center console behind the gear lever. The pedal has a hand throttle slightly offset to the right. The instrumentation, inspired by motorcycle, it is very easy to read and certainly the visual impact, on its blue backlighting and the semi analog components.

The glass surfaces provide excellent visibility in all directions for both the sedan and hatchback. Very good interior space for 4 people and the discrete volume of the trunk. Light and shadow when he takes the Aveo for a walk: the ride comfort is very good both in terms of acoustic regarding the absorption of the (few) that we encountered road bumps on Swiss roads.

The engine is more audible only at high revs with a tone that invites you to move quickly to the next report. The steering is nicely heavy and responds well to driver input confirming sufficiently accurate and responsive. There's a little 'game in a central location, perfectly in line with the placid soul of this car.

The braking system with 256 mm ventilated discs front and rear drum 200 gets the job done without effort, the brake control, however, demonstrate more effective if it is controlled by a decision while in the upper part of the race shows little bite. In the curve coupled between the frame and chassis with no problems holding the power supplied by the thrusters containing discreetly roll and pitch during braking more difficult.

The car fits secure cornering while remaining composed with very little tendency to expand his nose at higher speeds. The motors, all manufactured in Europe do their job without going over the sufficiency: Despite the extremely smooth delivery seem to lack punch. At full throttle the tachometer needle rises higher and higher without any significant change of pace worthy of the name: it pulls in a small claw hoping that unfortunately never comes, especially on the 70 hp.

In addition the noise in the vicinity of the limiter is not very encouraging. The version that is balanced by 87 hp, slightly more than 70 and live performance identical to the 1.4 100 hp, which nevertheless remains the most resilient. On the latter, the automatic search of the best interpretation of the wishes of the driver: traveling wire ensures a smooth flow of gas also at near the minimum, and when it sinks do everything to bring out the best, however, that from 1 .4 manifest the same "relaxation" of these engines.

Accelerations and times are certainly not the gun cotton. The manual transmission has a clutch soft and certainly progressive coupled to a lever with the right long trips. We look forward to the new 1.3 diesel which we are sure, thanks to the higher peak torque will be more satisfying to drive.

Consumption? As usual depend on the foot, especially on the automatic version 1.4 that, if pressed, sucks enough. But given the reluctance of the engines to sportsmanship, it is better not to pull too much and trying to ease travel distances point to rather than fun. However, the men of the Chevrolet have assured us that this beautiful frame, could soon have a varied sports to celebrate the successes in the WTCC.
