Ford is developing a system for monitoring heart rate through sensors positioned in the driver's seat. The system does not make contact with the skin, but works through clothing with a series of sensors placed at various heights in the back, also to fit on different body types of users. The project was developed with experts from the University of Aachen and opens several scenarios on the ability to monitor vital signs and physical condition of the driver, his reactions to various driving situations and the possibility of an imminent risk to health.
The research comes from estimates of the average age of customers, which in 2025 will see 23% of people over 65 years: the integration of vital signs in the SYNC multimedia system will then warn the driver of danger, but also to send GPS position of the car to the emergency services. In projects of Ford, the system will integrate with other services in the future: thanks to the collaboration with WellDoc, is being studied such a system for measuring glucose levels for diabetics, through an electronic connection with the company and also a program dabatase for people with allergies, indicating high levels of pollen in the air as already happens for some dedicated to iPhone App.
In the following videos of these two systems under development.
