Renault 4: For 50 years we road test

How many of you know, this year's Renault 4 celebrates 50 years of history was certainly a car that has helped to represent the French brand in the world and a car symbol of modern times and the economic boom. It 'was produced from 1961 until 1993 and, with various developments, they have been assembled well-8135424.

The Renault 4 was born with a target of close combat a 'pearl of the other French car, the Citroen 2CV that was memorable from his truly unique bodywork. The Renault 4 matured its success thanks to the convenience and power compared to his compatriot. The stepper motors under the hood of the car during its evolution went from a displacement of 0.75 liters to a maximum of 1.0.

The 4-cylinder 747 cc of the first set had already technically outdated at launch. But, being the same for years mounted on the 4CV, allowed to keep very low costs of production: water-cooled, was capable of delivering a maximum power of 24 bhp at 4500 rpm and maximum torque of 4.9 kgm at 2500 rpm.

Since 1964, the 4L was an engine from 845 cc, capable of 30 hp at 4700 rpm. R4 and versions based on the business instead of the displacement went from 747 to 782 cc with a maximum power of 27/30 hp depending on the series. In 1967 he was introduced instead of the four-speed gearbox. In 1975, the R4 vans fitted to the engines produced in Cléon (taken from R6): they guaranteed up to 34 hp at 4000 rpm and were then extended to the R4 GTL 1978.

In the second half of the '80s grew up to 956 cc displacement with a maximum power of 34 bhp, while they were on the GTL adopted disc brakes at the front. At the wheel of the car you feel catapulted into the past, even when stationary: just listen to the sound that emits when you close the door or wait for a few seconds until the engine starts to reveal his clear voice as a catalyst or a silencer is too intrusive.

For those who do it will instead just take a look at the doors, very thin or spartan cabin architecture with the shift lever sticking out next to the dashboard. Then, when you are unable to engage the first and last to leave, you must deal with the free transmission synchronizers and bearings, which today make "easy" any manual transmission.

It 'so easy to "stick" a gear while the engine revs and the car plant. But it is also the beauty of cars like these. Of course, talk about power, recovery and acceleration becomes completely out of place. But they are especially the brakes, at first sight disturbing, definitely in the spirit to carry you (walking) of the car and make you understand that it comes from another era.

Through the thin but generous crown steering there is a tendency to go along with the tires of the small road bumps while rolling and pitching remind you that you're in a car that has good half century "on its back" under braking and cornering you the impression of being on a boat in the middle of rough seas.

But it is also the tenderness that reactions of this kind inspire the driver to make this kind of unforgettable cars.
