Renault's new 1.6 dCi 130 engine Energy

Fifty years ago, Renault showed the pattern "4". A car that has driven France in the sixties. Became an icon as did the Fiat 500 or the Citroen 2CV with its 8 million copies around the world. Today, however, the Royal offers a new engine that launched the Energy series. This is the four-cylinder diesel 1.6 dCi 130, which gradually replace the 1.9 dCi 130 seconds rampant downsizing strategy.

The new 1.6 dCi 130 Energy equip at first leScenic and Grand Scenic. Will then be extended to the full range Megane and some C-segment models of the Nissan. In Italy will be available starting next July, but the lists are not yet available. There are many innovative features of the Renault engine designed in the department of Rueil Malmaison.

A project involving 160 engineers and for which the French company has invested 230 million €. The technicians have left blank sheet of paper to create a company that has engaged them for 5 years. The tests were carried out at the bar Lardy, those on the road (with over 700 thousand km run) to Aubevoye and production has already started in Cleon, the plant model "which is located in Normandy.

With this background one can understand what the new 1.6 dCi 130 is important for Renault and he should be proud because the people, because it responds fully to the strategic lines of the House who wishes to gain European leadership in reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The road traveled thus far would seem the right one: against a European average, which has CO2 emissions of 140 g / km, Renault is at an altitude of 125 g / km.

Its objectives aspire to 120 g / km in 2013 before falling below 100 g in 2016. Attainable with a wide range of electric vehicles but also in the further development of the newly formed Energy formula started with the 1.6 dCi 130 and the other which will consist of petrol engines that will use the symbol TEC.

But these will not arrive before next year. In detail, the new 1.6 dCi 130 is characterized by its architecture "square" (bore and stroke values almost equal) experience derived Renault in Formula 1, where this solution leads to better performance of the engine. The combustion chamber has been further improved with the adoption of four valves per cylinder instead of 2 on the old 1.9.

The maximum output is 130 hp (96 kW) at 4000 rpm, the torque is 320 Nm at 1,750 rpm (available for 80% already at 1,500 rpm, silent), consumes 20% less than the 1.9 dCi 130 with 4.4 l/100 km and 300 km of autonomy more. CO2 emissions in the range of 115 g / km. Finally, the new engine line Energy is also quiet - compared to 1.9 decibels even been halved - and requires less maintenance.

The reduction in cost for the interventions in the workshop is estimated at 20-30%, achieved thanks to the return to the distribution chain. Not bad for the 1.6 diesel is more powerful on the market and with the lowest CO2 emissions in the segment of the MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle). These are improved by 20% compared to the 1.9 dCi engine: the 5.5% decrease due to displacement, and 3% respectively for the reports of the transmission, the stop-start, regenerative braking and low-pressure EGR.

The thermomanagement to affect 1%, as well as the oil pump with variable displacement. The icing on the cake would be the combination of this engine with automatic transmission with double clutch EDC. Currently it is not possible, because the EDC supports a maximum torque of 290 Nm engineers are at work, but this solution will not be available until next year.

At launch, it is proposed to be valid 6-speed manual. How are you doing on the road On the occasion of its launch, we tested the new 1.6 dCi 130 engine mounted on the Renault Scenic Collection 2011. A first contact which gave rise to positive feelings. Outside and inside the car the noise level received is very low.

It then travels quietly and comfortably, because the vibrations typical of diesel engines are quite muted and contained. It is part of the Scenic is brilliant. Immediately transmit the agility of a utility vehicle. The engine has a good response and its high torque makes itself felt. Only the-go in third gear seems to "choke", but at this point is really asking too much.

It also has a decent shot, even if it is not necessary to push beyond 3500 rpm, because beyond this regime we have not seen performance increases, even though the 130 PS of maximum power can be reached at 4000 rpm. The range of optimal use is between 1500 and 3000 rpm: torque is pushing, pulling horses and consumption are kept low.

Among the new systems in place along with Energy 1.6 dCi 130 engine stop & start is no longer perceived by the driver. Ideal for city use during the car has the right time of activation. The car goes off without a wheel, in neutral and the clutch pedal raised. It restarts as soon as you press the clutch: no time to engage the gear and is already in motion.

A button on the left of the steering column allows for the inclusion or disconnection of the start & stop, and is automatically disabled if the car battery drops below 80% charge.
