In 2011, Volkswagen won the "Dakar Rally" for the third consecutive time. As in 2010, the House of Wolfsburg won the most popular race in the desert with a hat-trick. This year the first place was won by the driver Nasser Al-Attiyah who formed the crew with the navigator Timo Gottschalk. In second place was awarded the crew of De Villiers and von Zitzewitz, while defending champion Carlos Sainz won the third position with a navigation Cruz.

The fourth crew of Miller and Pitchford, occupied the sixth place finish. The "Dakar Rally" 2011 has been dominated by Volkswagen, which has won 12 stages out of 13, 7 won by Sainz, 4 Al-Attiyah and De Villiers. However, the House of Wolfsburg has put on display the reliability of the three Volkswagen Race Touareg, powered by the twin-turbo 5-cylinder 2.5 TDI.

In fact, four cars have not accused any problems during the 9600 km race. Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, said that "the superior technology of the Volkswagen is a special thank you for this historic third consecutive victory in the Dakar Rally, also obtained thanks to a perfect team work and exceptional skills in driving and navigation crews.

I am extremely proud of the work of collaborators who made this victory and the huge efforts made by the entire team during the race, which was without doubt the hardest Dakar has ever faced. "
