Saab 96 Legendary starts at the historic Monte Carlo

The Swedish rally legend Erik Carlsson assisted in the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Rallye Monte Carlo, a team that takes part taking place this week at the XIV Rallye Monte Carlo Historique. As a vehicle an exact replica of the vehicle is used, with the Carlsson won the 1963 rally. The classic Saab 96 was the German magazine "Oldtimer Markt" rebuilt and will be driven by editor in chief Peter Steinfurth, co-pilot will be Thorsten Loeber.

You start today in Reims in a vehicle that matches the original in every detail. This also includes the start number 283, was awarded the Erik Carlsson at the time. He will be there to send the team on the route. The car has a 3-cylinder two-stroke engine with 841 cc and 52 kW / 70 hp at 6,000 revolutions per minute.

The 4-speed transmission has a free run. The driving skills of Erik Carlsson (also known as "Carlsson on the Roof") helped make the Saab 1960s known as an automobile manufacturer. The now 82-year-old two-time winner of the Rallye Monte Carlo (1962 and 1963) in the RAC Rally, he was even able to score a hat-trick (1960-62).

He was born in Trollhättan in Sweden, the hometown of Saab. Throughout his career, Carlson was a factory driver for Saab. Even today he is constantly on the move as an ambassador of the brand Saab. The "David vs. Goliath" battles, the Carlsson supplied with larger, more powerful vehicles, in the annals of international rallying.

The first Saab cars only had small two-stroke engines with 748 cubic centimeters or 841 cubic centimeters. They lacked the horsepower to be competitive in competitions. Erik Carlsson from compensated for the disadvantage of having a special driving technique developed by him. Since the engine had to be kept constantly up to speed, he braked with his left foot, while the right remained on the accelerator.

In this way he managed the low weight of the vehicle and its maneuverability in turns to use optimally. Erik Carlsson was married to Pat Moss (1934-2008), the younger sister of racing driver Stirling Moss. She was also a successful rally driver and multiple winner in the women's competition of the Monte Carlo Rally.
