XL1 Volkswagen, the car that consumes less than one liter

Volkswagen is in its third prototype with a consumption of one liter of diesel per hundred kilometers. Now comes the XL1 and ten percent lower. Are not real consumption? As much as the approving your car or mine. The XL1 Volkswagen is only a concept car. A study to test the feasibility of a proposal, either in style, whether mechanical, more ambitious, as is the XL1, which advances such as the mobility of the future.

What it offers the XL1 is a diesel car, a TDI mated to an electric motor, a hybrid final. Very light, with just 795 kilos, only needs a power of 48 hp TDI engine. And that just simply two cylinders, as is the case of the XL1. If you need more power, because the XL1 reaches 160 km/h- or because they want to move more cleanly, has a 27 hp electric motor, ie 20 kW.

You can only move so electric and thanks to the energy stored in its lithium-ion batteries would have to travel 35 km before the TDI engine had to be initiated to start the batteries. Of course, figures for test cycle in order to compare with other cars on the market. But the intention is not to recharge the batteries consume diesel engine.

The XL1 is a plug-in hybrid. Therefore, the most efficient way to harness energy to recharge the XL1 is making home or elsewhere on the grid. Accelerates decently, with a record 0-100 km / h in 11.9 seconds. It is not a sport, but agile. The car only has two seats, but unlike the previous VW VW 1L and L1, the XL1 puts occupants side by side, instead of one after another.

Its size is unusual, as well as its shape, proportions and interior layout. Occupants are not aligned and all mechanics is placed in the rear. The body is made of carbon fiber, but using a method which would allow VW says the production of small series at low costs. The hinged door forward and up, take up little space allowing for greater accessibility.

On the back is also located the luggage capacity of 100 liters, despite the car tapers from the nose to the tail. Are the constraints of aerodynamics. It boasts an exceptional Cx of 0.186, which together with a front surface of only 1.5 m2 get any better at 2.5 times the aerodynamics of a Golf.

Just 1.5 master area? No trick, because the XL1 is three inches shorter than a Lamborghini Gallardo. Not bad served in width, two inches shorter than a Polo, but at length is nine inches smaller than the Polo, to sign 3.89 m. Special materials abound in the XL1. First, the carbon fiber body, but also notes that the wheel structure is plastic, lightweight magnesium instead of traditionally used the mark in their models.

Magnesium is still displayed (in this case in the tires), but we see the icing on the brakes, which are ceramic. Will have to see if they also have reduced the cost. If you do not remember bad solutions as shock absorbers and aluminum calipers are no longer new in VW, which has long explored how to get mini-consumption cars in series, as with that Lupo 3L.

It may seem a trifle, but this car has gotten down to one hundred 0.1 liters consumption of its conceptual predecessors. A genuine outrage percentage. The best thing is the amount of technology they have used the house. The twin-cylinder engine of 0.8 liters of displacement is exactly half of a 1.6 TDI, which has added a balance shaft.

TDI is coupled to an electric motor, this one again, turn disengaged to allow independent as pure electric and also officiate starter for the Diesel. But transmission is through the gearbox DSG seven-speed that is used in many models of the group. To get those 0.9 L/100 km claim to have worked in every aspect of the car, starting with thermal management.

Each engine, combustion and electricity, has its own cooling system. For the TDI a motorized blinds in the front are responsible for controlling the airflow receiving cooling circuit. And each has its own electric pump. The electronics controls the energy demand at all times so that, if the TDI engine needs to start, will be forced to work in about speeds and high load performance.

To achieve this, is supported by the electric motor or engine braking will become electric generator, recharging the batteries. During braking the electric motor is also responsible to restore energy to the batteries. And overall efficiency achieved is such that to shoot at 100 km / h the XL1, according to VW, it takes more than 8.4 hp.

So the losses are low, less than half that needs a Golf. Of course, the action of DSG is automatic and always aiming to achieve maximum efficiency. By the way, the XL1 is equipped with ESP for safety, following the trend of energy saving technology with LED lights and Michelin has developed a new technology for their low rolling resistance tread.

Tyres with a non-standard measures, like everything in the XL1: 115 R15 front and 145/55 R16 rear. Nobody has said that the street car 1 l/100 km is just around the corner. Not a XL1 is to be sold. But if you look at the time of appearance of successive studies 1L (2002), the L1 (2009) and XL1 (2011), it seems incredible fuel consumption in road cars are becoming closer.
