Convoys on the highway: the first successful test

We already talked about the project SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment), funded in part by the European Commission, whose aim is to develop the technology, applied to the car, will travel in long convoys on the highway "hooked" on a vehicle driving before using a special device. Among the partners there is also Volvo these days has left the laboratory tests to test the system directly on the roads.

Each car of the train measures the distance, speed and direction of the car has before him, and all vehicles are free to leave the train when they want. The advantage is that, once "in a row, you can relax and do what you want, read or drink coffee, because the car moves from one and the steering wheel individually depending on the path to follow.

The test involved driving a vehicle and one car on board and has had great success. Proceed in convoy, first of all ensure the security because it reduces human error that is the cause of at least 80 percent of road accidents. Secondly, you also save fuel with a consequent reduction in CO2 emissions by over 20 percent.

As we told the driver can focus on other things rather than driving the car and the fact that the limits shall maintain the highway system also serves to improve the traffic flow. The system is still being developed and before it can go into production and be put into practice it will take another few years.
