Lotus possible sale to Toyota

Lotus could abandon the current Malaysian property and enter into a joint venture with a large manufacturer such as Toyota, which already supplies engines to the British home. In an interview with Inside Line, Dany Bahar has assumed this important change to meet the costs of future technological developments related to the containment of consumption and emissions with a view to increase production up to about 8000 units per year, one third of such as targeting the U.S..

Bahar's goal remains to bring Lotus to risposizionarsi on the market, to undermine rivals such as Porsche and, therefore, could also be separation from the Malaysian Proton, Lotus current owner since 1996. The English house is still too small to support the development costs needed to create a new range of products and working with a global manufacturer like Toyota could permanently resolve the problem.

Bahar has not ruled out even the sale of the entire package to the Japanese manufacturer, as an alternative to an agreement of cooperation and technological exchange. Meanwhile, the study continues on the new models set to revolutionize the Lotus lists the next few years: after the cancellation of the Elan and the confirmation of new versions of the Evora, remain in contention Esprit, Elite, Elise and Eternal, in addition to the city car announced.

The use of common components between models would provide a limited number of copies for profit, especially in the case of front-engine Elite and Eternal, which should share 75% of the shares. Lotus is also continuing to seek public funding to expand the Hethel production facility and create about 1,000 new jobs, but if the operation is not possible to ready an agreement with Magna-Steyr to build cars in Austria.
