It is three weeks after the triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the Audi R18 TDI before the next race on the program. The 6-hour race in Imola, Italy (1-03.07.2011) comes at an important moment in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), that, from 2012, will become the FIA World Endurance Championship.
There was not much time to celebrate the tenth Le Mans victory for the Joest team. Since Audi wants to use the winning car with the number "2" for exhibits and demo rides, after the two serious accidents Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller had at Le Mans, two new emergency vehicles were built (R18-103 and R18-107).
Moreover, during the week after the DTM race, a new aerodynamic package with a higher downforce was tested at the Lausitz Ring and it will be used for the first time at Imola. Allan McNish, ten days after his accident at Le Mans, participated in a test with the R18 TDI. In Imola, the Scot will divide the cockpit of the number "2" (yellow colored markings) with Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen.
At the wheel of car number "1" (red paint marks) there will be for the first time the pair Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fässler. Kristensen / McNish and Bernhard / Fässler will take part also to the other three ILMC races at Silverstone, Road Atlanta and Zhuhai.
The Joest Audi Sport Team comes to Italy as the leader of the team standings. Peugeot is second, 34 points behind Audi. The 6 hours of Imola on Sunday, 3. July 2011 will start at 12 clock. Audi offers all fans the opportunity to follow the entire race live on the Internet.
At www.audi-microsites.com/lemans, in addition to the race there will be on-board images and telemetry data. The five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro will deliver on the Facebook and Twitter Channels Audi Sport actual background information.
