New BMW 6 Series Convertible: our road test

The generation gap that has made the BMW 6 Series Convertible with the arrival of the new model is one that impressed. The great German convertible we tested on the roads of eastern Sicily in recent days does nothing to conceal the significant distance separating it by the ancestor. And the fact underlines a very eloquent style.

The design of the new 6-series, like that of many BMW's latest generation marks a sharp break with the expressive language of the models designed by Chris Bangle. The great sporting Bavaria in particular, is a case of the most obvious: just look how they've changed the trunk and tail lights to see how the model is advanced.

Now the lines are lighter, leaner, streamlined and dynamic: a different story. Speaking of a BMW around 100,000 €, as an image, it's hard not to get carried away and avoid superlatives. With all that can do (well, however) the new 6 Series win would know even the most talented chilly: come and discover it with us.

New BMW 6 Series Convertible: our early road test the first impact with the German convertible is one that can not be forgotten. The comfortable leather seats, nice rimmed steering wheel, the very broad rules by which we can impute the driver's seat: all combine to put at ease the pilot.

If we must find a small defect, the electrical operation of the steering column is a little slow, but then that's how you can choose the best location for you. The location of the command is correct from the standpoint of ergonomics, but given the number of buttons, knobs and switches from the driver's side door to the tunnel, passing through the steering wheel and console (topped by the spectacular wide-screen), it is natural it takes a bit 'to get used to it.

Sometimes the problem is found instead in terms of visibility of the main tools: when the steering wheel is in its lowest position, the upper part of the crown goes to hide part of the two indicators circular. A hood open and also with the sun behind him, there is some reflection too. Trifles aside, the interior of the new 6 Series Convertible has succeeded in every detail.

The level of finish, and especially the perceived quality is really at its best: great scenery and, in particular, the leather upholstery with contrast stitching that characterizes the entire dashboard and center console. Even the inserts in polished aluminum and treatment of the tunnel are worth mentioning.

Difficult to find a detail out of place then, even at the bottom of the passenger compartment or inside storage compartments. The discourse on the quality of materials is also true for what concerns the assembly. In terms of living space instead, you can not say the same: if the person who sits in front has two real first class seats, the two rear passengers do not have any similar treatment.

The legroom for an adult passenger (not particularly high) was really a tight and you are with knees pressed uncomfortably against the back of the front seat, even when this is not completely backward. It must be said that BMW speaks honestly of a 2 +2 rather than a four-seater: better-than-place two children in the rear cabin.

Things are slightly better with regard to the availability of space in height, a passenger of average height, the roof touches. If we add that the wind protection offered by removable deflector behind the rear head restraints could be much better, you understand once and for all (if anything it was not clear ...) what is the ideal way to make this car, which seems tailor-made for a leak in two.

With lots of luggage, that space is not missing: 350 liters of volume is more than enough for most needs, and above all provide a reference value compared to direct rivals. The beauty of the new 6 Series, however, comes only when it starts up and there you go. Pleasant to drive, much to not want to give up the wheel, the German coach is really a copy.

Particularly impressive in its ability to literally change the face of pressing a button. Between Normal and Sport + (there is also an intermediate mode called Sport), it seems simply to drive two different cars. If you wonder how in the first absorption of the suspensions, prepared to swallow the bumps worse than the country roads of Sicily, despite the exaggerated wheels and runflat 19 "in the other two the dynamic growth and very exciting.

Selecting Sport +, the car feel in the hands tending the muscles and grinding his teeth, ready to attack the curves: the engine revs, is ready to earn more and faster down the regime, the structure hardens. And especially the rear end is revived. Even so, the DSC is completely switched off: it is possible only by pressing the appropriate button on the dashboard.

At that point, develop the reflexes and be ready to drive seriously: even with the six-cylinder, which has 320 hp and 450 Nm (delivered from 1300 rpm!), Just a trickle of wet asphalt and a hair gas curve from the center to make risqué numbers. The new 6-Series debuted in our market with two engines: the 3.0 inline six-cylinder turbo in the 640th (the unit mentioned above) and the 4.4 V8 twin turbo 650i, engine able to ground the beauty of 407 hp and 600 Nm, the latter value is reached at only 1750 rpm.

There would almost fly on the speech engine is so obvious on their level. Already has three liters in a scandalous way and allows the gas to virtually any system and with any gear with the certainty of return vivacity without batting an eyelid. But the eight-cylinder engine is really scary: the starting from zero is almost comparable to that of a true supercar (the state 5 / 2 home on the net 0-100), and elongation up to that speed does not include names, where is the limiter intervenes with a speed and nonchalance that comes just like the second ride.

The two multi-cylinder BMW, however, united by a shot that does not appear to invalidate even the threshold of 7000 rpm, differ in nuances. Evident, particularly the sound, which makes clear precisely at high speeds: where the 3.0 pulls out a music "metal" which in some ways echoes the traditional voice of the six-line of Monaco, the V8 sports a darker hue, a kind of breath in the background all played on an octave lower.

Also of note in the 650th issue in Sport mode + is produced in gorgeous puffs in issue. Caressing, cuddling, massage aids to the eardrums of those who appreciate some trifles. For the avoidance of doubt, however, must be emphasized that the decibel level produced by both units is always to engines "bourgeois" and "educated", so to speak.

The only alternative in terms of eight-speed automatic transmission is made by ZF and adopted on all the latest BMW. Impeccable Drive, looks good even when it is activated with the paddle at the wheel, the shift times are always quite short. Even the steering deserves consideration of all positive: at high speeds, the effect of the Active Steering, which makes control more robust it is quite evident and appreciated.

For the record, are available as optional four-wheel steering. BMW says the 640th for a consumption of 7.9 l/100 km on the combined cycle and emissions of 185 g / km of CO2, the result is also due to start & stop. For the 650th values rise to 10.7 l/100 km and 249 g / km of CO2. Very unnecessary, given the extent of what is under the right foot, as noted in actual values may reach depths of shame for environmentalists and self-righteous: not just to turn around, get off in the garage with the desire to drive can make it look like a small 70-liter tank.
