Techno Classica 2011: 50 years of Volkswagen Variant

50 years ago Volkswagen presented its first combined at the IAA: the type 3 variant. This event celebrates the Wolfsburg Auto Museum Volkswagen at the week's Techno Classica in Essen (30.3.-4.3.2011). On display will be a Type 3 Variant of 1962 and a Passat Variant of 1974. By 1500 (type 3) Volkswagen rose 50 years ago in the middle class.

The new technology of 1961 based on the Beetle and also had a rear engine. However, the converted in the displacement to 1.5 liters enlarged Beetle engine in a flat motor. Thus, the height of the engine reduced to a mere 42 centimeters by 20 centimeters. As a result, was established in addition to the luggage compartment under the front hood, a second trunk in the rear.

Only then, the combination version was possible. As a three-door five-seater VW 1500 Variant has a capacity of 700 liters, with rear seat rear seat back is 1200 liters. The Variant sales began in spring 1962 at a price of 6700 DM. Until the cessation of production in 1973 were about 2.6 million Type 3 sold.

About half of them were variants. No wonder that the type 3-successor of 1973, the trade could be ordered from the outset as an alternative to the sedan variant - standard with five doors and, of course, again a larger trunk. In the Passat, the first-generation (measured roof-high) 750 to 1500 liters cargo volume available.

The base price was at the beginning of 9205 D-Mark. To date, seven generations were about 5.3 million Passat Variant. (Ampnet / jri)
