BMW Group Italy Driving Academy: Safe driving course at Monza

BMW held at the Monza circuit one stage of the BMW Group Italy Driving Academy, a safe driving course dedicated to all users. While supporting these activities in Italy since 1985, since 2006 BMW has been engaged in the first person to provide such services at major national facilities, with the support of ACI Vallelunga and its instructors in five years already 12,000 people attended the BMW Driving Academy courses.

The stage of Monza has allowed us to experience first-hand experience with a course of a day behind the wheel of BMW and Mini cars: a chance to learn or revise driving techniques and concepts which, unfortunately, are not always communicated to those who follows the driver's license. Through theory and practical exercises, you can create dangerous situations and learn to manage the reactions of the car, keeping in mind that all the advances of electronics can not overcome the laws of physics.

E 'own theory that the course begins with knowledge apparently discounted as the optimal driving position, the right hand position on the steering wheel and the main forces acting on the car while driving. Many people, regardless of age and mileage, are in fact relying solely on their instincts and past experience on the field, ignoring the knowledge of their vehicles and driving assistance systems available today, from ABS to the more complex control systems stability.

The exercises are held on the track using Mini Cooper S, BMW 330i Coupe, BMW 330d xDrive and BMW 123d, the latter with an automatic transmission. The three exercise stations allow you to familiarize yourself with the cars and driving techniques in detail, while at the end of the day you can make some steps on the complete circuit, slowed by some artificial chicane points faster, to briefly address the concept of course, and put into practice some of the concepts studied during the day.

The first exercise is to slalom between the pins on the home straight of the circuit of Monza. A short path with reverse end is approached at low speed. With the 330th coupe, in first gear, the time delay between throttle and steering, strictly to be carried out without moving your hands from the position of 9.15, allows a smooth transition.

At the wheel of the Mini Cooper S, with rear carriage, the situation is quite different: the "skid car" simulates skidding on a low grip and already at 20 km / h is necessary to continuously correct the skidding of the rear. At the wheel, this results in a continuous arms, paying attention to coordination, but also to the eye, which must always point to the direction of travel and not, as many do by instinct, the hood of the car.

After an initial period of difficulty, the Skid Car becomes a real "ride" to drive with the accelerator in perennial opposite lock between the pins. The second exercise involves the 'double obstacle avoidance of a sudden, followed by an emergency brake. Of pins represent the obstacles and the difficulty of the exercise, carried out with stability control permanently switched on, is not to change the pressure on the accelerator and, above all, do not brake.

A 70 km / h constant car then undergoes a double load transfer sudden, thanks to the weight distribution does not create any heels: the same maneuver, accompanied by the release of gases or use of the brake, he would work overtime electronic systems or, at worst, would lead to loss of vehicle control.

Easier, at least in theory, the emergency braking from 100 km / h on a straight path: the only care is to use all the force on the pedal without hesitation, leaving the ABS to deal with the grip and, in the case of manual transmission, always remembering to press the clutch. A short path artificially wet in practice allows us to understand the concept of understeer and oversteer.

The exercises, contrary to what we expect, will be made in either case with rear-wheel drive, trying to "provoke" the car to get the desired effect. The oversteer is tested with the 330th, with 272 hp strong that controls detached easily bring "flag" in the rear first gear: the speed and accuracy of opposite lock to retrieve the crush.

Understeer, however, is caused by the wet 123d, entering at 45 km / h in a sharp curve with a circle, without releasing the accelerator, in this case, however, the front will slide to the outside and the recovery operation will require a minimum of coordination: releasing the slight reduction of the steering angle, to retrieve the tire footprint and return trajectory.

To avoid the classic mistake that you can do in these cases, that is, using the brake. After a few hours spent doing "homework" between the pins, the circuit of Monza is now available for a full lap. The instructor completes a demonstration, with students on board, to show the artificial chicane placed on straight stretches of the circuit, but also to clarify one of the most important driving on the track: braking.

Circuit in the brake system is used at the limit of its possibilities, delaying the braking point and trying to get 100% of its capacity, then reducing the pressure until you reach the curve, which is optimized through the transfer of cargo and taking care of the mm trajectories. In turn provided with the 330th Coupe try to get the best out of the car and, above all, valuable guidance from instructors.

Despite the artificial chicane, braking occurs at quite high speed and the instructor "calls" the disconnected when the fold is really close. Tyres, Pirelli for all the cars of course, are called to work overtime and into the corner trim street leaves a bit 'of space to roll, without the slightest unbalance the car.

The 6-cylinder with long reports no problem pulling out, stretching towards the 7000 rpm with ease. The first variant is very close and deals using the curbs, and the following in full extension, to the variation of the Canal, can lead to limit the 4th gear. Once through the Canal and its demanding braking, this is the first of Lesmahagow, waiting patiently to be addressed carefully at the right time to reopen the gas and the second Lesmo requires a further slowdown in input.

After the artificial chicane at the Seraglio, arrives quickly Ascari, to address high speed and with little margin on the trajectory: the first wrong turn left then makes it impossible to get out strong on the straight and the three curves sinuously be joined together to release the car fast in the final stretch, where a new artificial chicane slows us down.

The dish takes the test again, with his long folds, to be faced with a trajectory that, outgoing, touches the grass outside and then jump back onto the main straight.
