Toyota FT-86: confirmed the 2-liter boxer

Toyota has unveiled in recent days on new advances FT-86, the rear-wheel drive compact coupe destined to play (albeit after a long period of time) that part of a distant heir to the Celica. The European branch of Toyota has indeed confirmed that the announcement of the FT-86, on sale since 2012, will be equipped with a 4-cylinder boxer with the classic architecture (unique to Subaru) from 2 liters.

To apply this unit Toyota D4-D technology appropriately updated: it consists, in brief, a primer in "traditional", ie, indirect injection (suction ducts) in addition to the injector "direct", ie, in-room blast. With this system, is ensured a high torque at any rpm. It 's a bit (but in this case, with regard to power) as the combination supercharger - turbocharger of the Lancia Delta S4.

Among the latest generation of cars that use this technology, we must remember Lexus (with the IS-F) and Ferrari, Italy with 458. More technical details will be revealed later. For now, the same Toyota anticipates that its technology D4-S combines high performance and high torque in limited consumption and emissions.

" Not much, but it can be assumed, based on the 4-cylinder boxer from 148 hp and 197 Nm, which mounts on the new Subaru Impreza Unveiled in recent days at the Show in New York, at least 160 hp and 220 Nm of torque. Among the substantial differences regarding the two powertrains (the 2-liter Subaru and its evolution in a "revised" by Toyota), the change of FT-86, unlike the five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic, it will be six-speed manual or automatic.

For both, the connotation is much more sporty, in line, then, with the trump of the coupe: "The offer of the manual gear change operations quickly and accurately, thanks to the reduced excursion of the lever. Also for the automatic ' Emphasis will be placed on sportsmanship: the gear control shall be effected by the paddles mounted behind the wheel, "anticipate Toyota engineers.

Still on the transmission, the FT-86 - which, remember, is confirmed rear-wheel drive - will be equipped with limited slip differential. In this regard, the advances of the manufacturer indicate that "the rear-wheel drive coupe will provide the driver with a high degree of traction, stability and maneuverability, while maintaining high standards of entry and exit in the corner." The Toyota FT-86 (the final name has not yet been confirmed) will be sold at the Toyota brand to the markets of Europe and Japan, while North America will be marketed by Scion, as anticipated by the FR-S concept shown in recent days at the Show New York.
