Fiat in Russia: new plant at 1.6 billion euro?

According to the latest rumors have Fiat plans to invest 1.6 billion euro in Russia for the construction of a new plant from 300,000 cars a year. Internal sources have suggested that the Italian company would be in contact with the VEB (the Russian state-owned bank) and the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) to obtain the necessary funding.

By VEB there would have been a first, positive meeting. The booming Russian market (+77% with 293,495 units in the last two months) is attracting many manufacturers, eager to gain significant market share and exploit government incentives for the development of the auto industry: they will be accessible to foreign corporations, provided that they assemblino at least 300,000 cars per year on Russian soil since 2015.

After the failure of the alliance with the Lingotto Sollers have even proposed to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development to build the new plant in solitary. But it is not ruled out an alliance with another local partner: Fiat Group in recent days would have been in contact with TaGaz.

The rumor is partially confirmed by the words of Sergio Marchionne said that Fiat Group will expand in that country, possibly under a new partnership. The first model to leave the assembly line for Fiat Russian should be a compact sedan: to be derived from a Dodge (but marketed in Russia as Fiat), to be launched in January 2012 in the United States.
