New Ford Focus ECOnetic

Provisional data, but the new Ford Focus ECOnetic is on track to become the most efficient compact car of the moment. According to initial tests, it was announced average fuel consumption of 3.5 l/100 km and emission levels of 95 g / km of CO2. Do not hit the market until early 2012. Automobile manufacturers continue their challenge to achieve maximum efficiency.

Newcomer to the market, Ford is already finalized all the details of the ecological version of the Ford Focus III. The new Focus ECOnetic has everything going for it to become the car of the compact segment now more efficient. According to preliminary estimates, the new Ford Focus ECOnetic will not be ready until early 2012.

Versions will be marketed in five-door body and Sportbreak or family. The Ford Focus ECOnetic features a 1.6 TDCi Duratorq diesel engine with 105 hp, combined with a manual gearbox with six gears somewhat longer developments regarding versions and is marketed (the variants of this engine to be sold today yield 95 and 115 hp, respectively).

The result of the combination of this engine and this type of transmission, the blue oval provisional data announced a truly amazing: an average consumption of 3.5 l/100 km and emission levels of 95 g / km of CO2, numbers significantly better than one of its biggest rivals, the VW Golf BlueMotion (3.8 l/100 km and 99 g / km of CO2 to the German model).

In addition to the modifications to the gearbox, the Ford Focus ECOnetic has several technology solutions that help minimize the cost of fuel and CO2 emissions level. Mechanically, adopting a revised and improved new injection system with eight-hole nozzles, which contributes to more efficient combustion.

On the other hand, has tried to minimize any possible loss of engine friction, as well as the use of a special oil for transmission. For its part, the intake system features an intercooler that happens to incorporate a new water cooling system instead of air. It has also incorporated a new variable geometry turbocharger.

Finally, we have added a specific diesel particulate filter and a catalyst to help reduce emissions slightly more nitrogen oxide NOx. The technical characteristics of the Focus ECOnetic goes far beyond the merely mechanical, adopting technological resources, such as a device for optimal change gears, tires with low rolling resistance, the Auto Start-Stop-start-stop automatic engine, not forgetting, of course, the increasingly common regenerative braking device.

It recovers energy lost in braking and deceleration, is transformed into electrical energy stored in the battery later. In developing this version ecological Focus ECOnetic, Ford engineers have also relied heavily on the aerodynamic factor. With regard to the versions already on the market, there have been small changes in the body with the addition of small baffles to the underside of it.

The end result is an aerodynamic Cd coefficient was 0.295. Also, like the other variants of the Focus III we already know the system is also adopted Active Shutter Grille, a device that regulates the opening and closing of the slots in the radiator grille. With this technological resource, eliminating the resistance that would cause the constant airflow through the radiator.

The theme is clear: better aerodynamics, better fuel consumption.
