Mercedes-Benz builds on production of fuel cell stacks in Canada

Mercedes-Benz will build in Canada to produce its own fuel cell stack. This combines the company to develop and produce one of the most important components for electric vehicles with fuel cells at the site Vancouver. The goal, the entire value chain from materials research development to production to be covered under production conditions.

At the new manufacturing site is being prepared for about 2,000 square meters, the production of stacks for fuel cell vehicles. "Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC) in Burnaby, east of Vancouver, was founded in February 2008 as a joint venture between Daimler (50.1%), Ford (30%) and Ballard (19.9%).

There also the fuel cell stack was developed, which is used in the current Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL, and city bus Citaro fuel-cell hybrid. The construction of production facilities should be completed by early 2012. After gradual testing and startup phase will then start from 2013, the series production of the next generation of fuel cell stacks.

These are characterized by their higher performance and efficiency above all by its compact design. Make them suitable for use in sedans like the Mercedes-Benz C-and E-Class.
