Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD: our road test

The first vehicle marketed under the aegis of Chrysler Jeep is also better finished and more careful so far produced. A "coincidence" certainly significant, auspicious, which is reflected in the 36% mark obtained by the U.S. in reference to the values of the first quarter of 2010. It is therefore appropriate to recalibrate the adjectives and reassess the nuances, because the Grand Cherokee has the fourth-generation technical solutions and aesthetic devices so good as to render meaningless the epithet "American" with which so far has always been described: the line from American , American finishes, sophistication and equipment from the United States.

These concerns fall away in front of a nice body and well designed, with generous dimensions (482 cm long, 194 wide by 178 high) but completely in line with the average of the segment. It convinces in particular geometric shape of the side, thanks to the huge 20-inch alloy wheels (with 265/50 tires well) supplied as original equipment for the Laredo version, the subject of our road test.

Under the hood of the Grand Cherokee is expected to place the 3.0 liter six-cylinder diesel production VM, which delivers 241 hp 4,000 rpm and a torque of 550 Nm between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm. This unit turns out to be pleasant and enjoyable, with no special virtue of linear extension, but with delivery and availability of torque at any speed.

His only flaw is due to noise, especially at higher speed: in these conditions the 3.0 rombosità shows a rather pronounced, set off by an automatic reluctant to use higher gears and very embarrassed when making kick down when you need the maximum recovery. Unfortunately, the transmission charge is a clear gap with the competition longer valid, thanks to the absence of manual mode.

We refer in particular to the ZF eight-grafts, which will also be used on the Grand Cherokee since 2012. This new SUV will make the automatic even quieter - especially at a constant speed, is inserted into the eighth - and make optimal soundproofing already perfect in containing wind noise and rolling noise of tires.

The interior of the Laredo version is characterized by the inserts in leather and metal coatings. The dashboard gives a feeling of luxury and elegance, especially in its upper half is entirely covered with leather. Less convincing the cabinet change, due to some plastics look too poor. Excellent finishes and instead pairs.

The power seats are comfortable and well-structured, have the heating and ventilation but are little sections and restraints: when traveling at high speed along a highway is necessary to point the knees and the left foot (which has no support) looking to restrict the movements of the body.

The space for rear occupants is remarkable, as well as the fact that the trunk measuring well 782/1.554 liters. The numerous adjustments of seat and steering wheel allow obviously sew a suitable driving position, even though the ergonomics of the controls is not optimal: on the steering column is the only lever left to run lights and wipers, to be quite overcrowded commands .

The Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8 engine and six-cylinder diesel are available with the sophisticated all-wheel drive and Quadra-Drive II with the Quadra-Lift air springs, adjustable to four positions. The isolation from road roughness is always great, even while traveling at high speed, but when dealing with small radius curves emerging problems of "softness" easily attributable to the significant size.

The Jeep is always safe and predictable, even at the highest speeds sport is awkward and out of context. On the highway it seems to drive a sedan instead of higher-end (thanks to the numerous driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control), while off-road behavior reveals a surprising and little influenced by the mass.
