Traffic accidents: a UN resolution to reduce them

The data of the traffic police indicate that Italy has managed to give a 40% decrease deaths resulting from road accidents, as recommended by the European Union for the first decade of the new century. These achievements are due to new features, such as penalty points and Tutor highway system in addition to significant investments for the safety of cars made by car manufacturers.

Now, however, and the UN to try to lower the number of road deaths: for the decade just begun, the international body has prepared a "Comprehensive Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020" which will come into force on May 11. This is a directive which aims to foster the development of national policies on security and to implement activities on the road against the risks especially for those countries - mainly located in the Third World - where mortality is still at unacceptable levels.

How unacceptable is the fact that each year 1.3 million people lose their lives due to a traffic accident while tens of millions are injured. The UN program is clear: At this rate and with the boom in car sales in several third world countries, in a few years could reach a quota of 2.4 million deaths every 12 months, with a little impact in poor countries, where a road network held together with a spread of evil old and unsafe cars are the main cause of accidents.

And it is precisely these areas that the international body wants to improve: with the resolution 64/255 seeks to intervene in areas such as management of road safety, mobility and safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users and incident response . Among the proposals sent to the Member States there is a need to build safer roads, to have independent authorities responsible for dealing with road safety and increase vehicle safety including through the extension of compulsory use of seat belts and child safety seats.
