BMW Z2: 2014 in a compact roadster

In Monaco of Bavaria you bet on the "small is beautiful". From the 1 X1 Series, BMW also plays its cards displacements and medium-size - small. Appeal lacks only a model of pitch sports: a two-seater, which would incorporate the concept was born with the Z3 and continued with the Z4, but developed a range of intermediate models between the smallest and the 3 Series.

These days, comes forward the hypothesis of the BMW Z2 the classic spider (body to which BMW has always winked) intended, it seems, to fill the void left by the Z3. The car, expected  (from 2014 onwards) is a candidate to the demanding role of competing against the Mazda MX-5, the best-selling roadster in history.

This, in brief, is the concept indicated by BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer, who do not define a fan of spiders. However, the continued success of the MX-5 from the top BMW is interpreted as a clear signal. And here are the characteristics of the Z2, as we shall see no less than three years will be a soft-top roadster (in the purest tradition of the spiders of Monaco of Bavaria), "In all likelihood, no Front-wheel drive", indicate the upper floors in Monaco.

With this, not entirely sure it will once again play the card of the classic rear-wheel drive: it seems, in fact, that will be also evaluated the hypothesis of a four-wheel drive (with results such as production costs, we would add, is all to see). It seems curious that the "Z2" is born as Ukl1 conceptual evolution of the project, started in 2009, for "small" BMW front-wheel drive that would have been expected over the next year, in a market share of the Series 1 and the Mini.

The concept of front-wheel drive does not appear to have been welcomed by the public. In essence: the project can move forward only if it is all-wheel drive. Or, alternatively, rear. If Ukl1 architecture will be used, this means that the Z2 can be marketed in three years: spring 2014 for the roadster, coupe for a possible autumn 2014.

However, there is also a "Plan B", which suggests the launch of the brand new baby roadsterper 2015, or even in 2016. In this case, the long wait could be rewarded by the pleasure of the confirmation of the rear-wheel drive. The case revolves around the creation of the heir of the 1 Series, a follow-up of the smallest of Monaco of Bavaria in key coupe and convertible.

If confirmed, would not be a stop-gap measure, but an increase in models that would ensure the presence beyond 2020. Is still an architecture of the engine: 2-liter petrol, turbocharged, three power levels, from 170 to 272 hp (whose initials identifying, therefore, would be 18th, 20th, 28th), and an equivalent size, turbodiesel, which could be from 184 or 204 hp.
