Mazda RX-9 is ongoing to develop, let alone a hybrid. These would be the latest rumors from the Japanese and the same, suggesting an uncertain future for the Wankel rotary engine. The reason for this depressing news is to be found in the low sales figures of the current RX-8, the same discouraging home to propose a new model generation.
On the other hand, the Japanese manufacturer has to deal with the need to retire the current Wankel 1.3, too polluting and thirsty. But in the words of senior management of the house, this is not the end of Rotary and even the RX. In fact, according to inside sources, there would be some excitement around the project of a new RX-7: the car would be developed on the platform stiffened and stretched (because of the fixed roof) of the next-generation MX-5.
Virtually guarantees in terms of handling. Officially, all is silent. But the repositioning of the RX range, and its construction on an existing platform and successful commercial strategies seem more logical to be undertaken by an economic point of view. More nebulous are the specifications of the next rotary engine, Mazda's mixed blessing: as you know at the time, the new Wankel (Code 16X) should have a displacement of 1.6 liters and consume up to 30% less.
The house also has expressed its desire to increase power and torque throughout the rpm through the direct injection (officially confirmed) and a supercharging system through standard turbocharger or supercharger electric. The real obstacle to overcome is the adjustment of the engine anti-pollution rules currently in force.
