It will be a day of rebirth of the De Tomaso, the legendary Argentine-Italian brand of sports cars sunk into oblivion for more than seven years, and now ready to return to the spotlight at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show 2011 (3-13 March) when it is officially unveiled the all-new crossover sedan-SLS.
After having previewed the Secretary to the Prime Minister Gianni Letta, the De Tomaso has unveiled new details on the car, characterized by a unique body that combines the features of a comfortable three-volume saloon with those of a crossover from the raised center of gravity. The acronym SLS, which should be replaced with another name, stands for "Luxury Sport Sedan" and perfectly describes the ambitions of this flagship premium nearly 5 meters long and 1.65 m high, with four comfortable seats dedicated to accommodate as many lucky passengers.
The new De Tomaso will be offered initially with two powerful petrol engines: a V6 capable of 300 bhp and a powerful V8 that will release well 550 hp. The enormous power will be downloaded and assisted by the four-wheel drive six-speed automatic transmission. In the second phase is expected to introduce a six-cylinder turbodiesel, an obvious choice to achieve a reasonable sales success in the old continent, where this type of engines are very popular.
The platform used by the SLS is made entirely of aluminum and uses technology that provides Univis assembly using extruded aluminum body, joined together with cross printed, trimmed and welded with the laser. According to the manufacturer this technology should minimize the time of manufacturing and assembly, thereby lowering their costs.
De Tomaso SLS is assembled at the Grugliasco (former Pininfarina), at a rate that will fluctuate over 3,000 units per year, sold at a starting price of around € 85,000. The mechanical parts of the car will be hand made in the factory instead of Dhelphi, near Livorno. Over the next four years, the De Tomaso invest approximately € 116 million which will be used in addition to the production of SLS, even for the construction of two new models assembled their Grugliasco plant.
It is a hatchback with four seats and a sports coupe will be produced, respectively, at a speed of 3,000 and 2,000 units every 12 months.
