Lexus CT200h: road test

As promised yesterday, here is the record of the trial of the new Lexus CT200h on the streets of Lisbon. First consideration when getting on the board: it's a Lexus, and it shows. Very high perceived quality of materials, from leather steering wheel with exposed seams, as well as the attention of many small details.

And comfortable bucket seats, whose adjustment is done electrically. Good driving position, with all controls at your fingertips. Nice dashboard and very obvious by the sharp contrast with the black background; slender but rich in content, is finished in every detail. The visual elements, such as the display of the navigator, are collected in the upper zone.

At the heart of the central pillar and place the knob to select three driving modes: Normal, Economy and Sport. These are supplemented by the rules "EV", all-electric. After pressing the "Start" button, and having selected the "run" D, you can leave. The first meters you take full advantage of the electric motor.

Mode "EV" you can enter only when stationary, provided that the state of battery charge is sufficient. Allows you to travel for about 2 km in total absence of fuel consumption and emissions, in absolute silence and at a maximum speed of 45 km / h. If you exceed this speed, or you still need a higher acceleration, the mode "EV" is automatically disabled.

Do not expect performance sports car in this mode: as you may have guessed is used mainly in the city, when it is "column". The electric motor provides power only when needed and it is obviously "off" at times when the car is stationary: the ideal, of course, when you travel on roads where traffic is king.

Staying in the reduction of fuel consumption and pollution, we first tested the ECO mode. In this case, reduced the reactivity of the butterfly as well as control the air conditioning is optimized to prefer the economy. With the ECO mode, the car's behavior is peaceful, in the true sense of the word: calm, peaceful and carefree.

A point that was also highlighted by the blue color of the backlighting of the instruments. One way to use the classic day trip, when the rush is not your concern. In this case, the automatic transmission helps even more like "easy" mode of the ECO. Acting on the central knob, it instantly switches to SPORT mode.

The backlight color changes to red and as if by magic eco drive the monitor, which indicates how the guide is "eco" in every moment, it becomes a revolution. In this case we will have a more dynamic driving attitude, maximizing performance and agility. The control of the hybrid system increases the voltage of 150V and then coming up to 650V, increasing the total power transmission.

The engine speed is maintained at higher rates, while the settings of the throttle and the electric power steering (EPS) are modified to ensure greater responsiveness to input from the driver. In addition, there is a less invasive operation by systems of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC).

As already mentioned, the transition is immediate, and this can be useful in situations where we need more responsiveness on the part of the car. Sport mode gives a touch of aggression so that it takes more, however, with the vocation of this environmental model. The last mode, although we could call it sub-modes, is the "B" selected by the change in place of "D".

In this case, charging the battery is enhanced in all situations of deceleration, as well as engine braking downhill: the effect is noticeable even in sound level with some increase in noise. On a mixed path, punctuated by sudden storms and gusts of wind, CT200h is well behaved. Silent and always comfortable, showed a good grip even in wet conditions, while all the control systems do their duty in case of sudden braking.

As for the system board, this is controlled via a small joystick on the center console, are still there for the driver commands to voltante. For more technology will be pleased to know that the audio system is compatible with iPod and iPhone, but the surprise is more than a hard disk on which to store our music library.

There is, however, saying that the USB plug does not seem an ideal location as it is not well studied the possibility of a housing for your phone or other MP3 player connected to the USB port itself. As for the rear passengers, the accommodation is comfortable, even on the length of the wheelbase is 2,600 mm.

Among other things, no matter how bulky rear-seat passengers: inserting reverse turns the camera back with the assistance of graphics for the car park. To note the luggage on two levels, the capacity is 375 liters of storage, increased up to a maximum of 985 liters with the lowering of the rear seats.

Personally, I admit that I did get carried away by the factor "ECO". Because if you think about this symbol can mean both ecological, and economic. On the one hand the obvious environmental reasons, the other a touch of attitude to the savings that we think is in everyone. If the test begins, my thoughts went to "SPORT" mode I have to say that after I left are captured by the monitor eco drive and his hand.

On a personal level, I might even dare say that my preferred mode is the ECO-B, the more savings. Yet, believe me, I have Scottish ancestry ... LEXUS CT200h + very low emissions, "cleanest car in the world". + Quality of materials and attention to detail - the onboard navigation system is not intuitive - Positioning USB
