Winter tires: the test of truth

Travel safely when temperatures fall below 7 ° C is a matter of rubber winter to be exact. Because the tires are like shoes: they must be changed depending on the season. Ever put to canvas footwear for walking in the snow? Well, the car works in much the same way: summer tires work best until the asphalt becomes tricky because of frost or a sudden snowfall, winter tires and make their contribution in their best these conditions.

To experience the real benefits of these tires, motors. it took part in the tests organized by Assogomma Federpneus and the stunning backdrop of Cervinia, Valle d'Aosta. The tests were carried out with vehicles of different types and traction in the most critical day of the march. Recommended by valid international driving instructors of the Centre de Adamich sure, we were able to simulate different situations of concern and note the differences in reaction depending on the type of tire.

We went in succession on three Alfa Romeo Giulietta equipped with winter tires, mixed (summer and winter) or summer only. A good test for understanding what it means to tackle a slalom obstacle avoidance and braking on board the same car tires with different characteristics. The first response on a snowy background has allowed us to appreciate how easily and safely perform maneuvers such as a car fitted with winter tires: everything runs smoothly and you avoid the obstacle with ease.

Things get complicated with winter tires mounted on the front axle only: the car initially inspires safety, but then, during the circumvention of pins and braking can be broken down in the back. It is not easy to control it and not all drivers are able to proceed without putting the car sideways.

The discourse changed radically with the summer tires on all four wheels, in which case you must proceed at reduced speed, braking the car is almost uncontrollable, and swerves in all directions, plus need a lot more room to stay (more than 30 %). Let's turn to another situation, the daily march in a straight line with a simple braking at 40 km / h and the entrance of a climb.

Climb aboard a Toyota Auris HSD with winter tires: the-go place in agility and braking does not seem to give great concern, even uphill proceed smoothly, despite the snow. Completely different picture with the car equipped with 'shoes' summer: straight-line feel to work the controls to keep the car stable as possible, the stopping distance when braking are very long because the wheels tend to lock up the abs and not can do its job, while you get stuck up and you are likely only to make work unnecessary engine and transmission parts.

Contrary to what one might think, even the streets uphill is no problem with the winter, and we saw him leaving the Auris to climb on the new Peugeot 5008 SUV is a good start and go up on streets that shipped with the summer would absolutely impossible. On the whole space of the Lion, also, we also experienced driving with chains that provides grip and gets off the hook but transmits a lot of vibration on the steering wheel and urges the mechanical considerably.

Later there was what might be considered in all respects the litmus test, the re-start up and the emergency brake on the plains and down to the edge of a full SUV, namely the Mercedes GLK with rubber tires summer and winter. With covers summer climb, but if you are forced to stop due to a stop sign, a row or for other reasons, again is not as simple as you can imagine.

Despite four-wheel drive, the car digs into the snow tends to slide backward when you release the accelerator, a situation that in reality could create unpleasant collisions with other cars. In addition, the braking, especially downhill, it seems to never end. With winter tires instead, share in slope is an exercise that is exceeded without the least effort and the braking is effective with the stopping distance more than halved.

Finally, to see how it behaves like a sports car race of the Jaguar XKR, we found three cars equipped with mirror, respectively, winter tires, tires mixed (summer and winter on the front or the back) and only in summer. With the controls and put the winter tires coupé Jaguar addressed the roundabout in the snow with utmost ease, and with winter tires mounted only on the axis of traction tended to go straight, forcing us to leave the throttle all the time in to the trajectory .

Unnecessary attempts in the car with summer tires: the car was pretty difficult to ride in a real situation and we could not help but leave her in the street. In other words, a verdict that leaves no way out: if you want to perform safely even in winter you need to trust the right tires and not to seek the way of saving mounts only on the axis of tension, a situation tolerated by the new rules of the road but very dangerous.

The speech also applies to vans, to ambulances and school buses: in comparative tests conducted by professional instructors we were able to observe how the vehicles are highly sensitive to the tires, especially with cargo on board, and as you lengthen the spaces Braking of ambulances driving with summer tires.

The covers are also very important for the school to whom we entrust the transport of new generations. Finally, a simple test but very clear: the dreaded mount of chains. This exercise was completed by some participants with the help of instructors, a sign that says a lot about the difficulty of positioning of the chains, and the validity of the alternative offered by winter tires.

At the end of our test, we appreciate the evolution that these tires have had over time in terms of noise, seal and comfort, and if we had to choose between having the chains in your car or the installation of winter tires - as ordinances require different in different Italian regions, following the amendments to the Rules of the road - surely opt for the second solution.

Taken a more comfortable and certainly more versatile, which would allow us to travel safely even in heavy rain or frost on the roads flooded.
