One of the key priorities, if not the most important together with the reduction in fuel consumption and emissions: reducing the weight of Ford's future is almost an obsession in the coming years. To play the position to make progress in this field was Alan Mulally in person, number one in the house of Dearborn.
Arrived at Ford in 2006, one of the first decisions that was faced was the future destiny of the Explorer, a big SUV that goes for more on overseas markets. "Alan told us that we had to completely reinvent the model," says Derrick Kuzak, Ford's product development manager. With the sword of Damocles of future rules in terms of fuel consumption and emissions to lie on the head, the task was simple: ol'Explorer lose weight and consume less, or cut.
It worked. Kuzak introduced two years ago when the final design of the Explorer to the verdict of Mulally, speaking volumes did not attack commercial or profit forecasts, but just pointing out how the new model weighs almost 50 kg less than its predecessor, while consuming the 24 % less.
Why this story? Because in the next decade this will be the norm for all new projects. The ambitious CEO of Ford Motor Company made it clear to his engineers that all new models will be presented from 2012 to 2020 will lose between 100 and 350 kg (!) Than those they replace in international markets.
It appears that Mulally has also made it clear that if a new product should not be able to offer better fuel economy in its class, he will not give the green light to production.
