New Ford Focus: Our road test

We can quibble with technical and technological solutions, security systems, motors and environmental respect. And instead the main objective of the new Ford Focus is to resize the success of Fiesta and Ka .... Paradoxical but understandable. The C-segment sedan, on sale from mid-March, will have to re-establish the hierarchy in the range and divide the power of the utility: from the 70/30% in favor of the segment A-B segment will be 50/50%, thanks to the introduction of the new C-platform that has brought and will bring the launch of ten new vehicles including the C-Max/C-Max7, vertrek Focus and EV.

! There is a third-generation Focus, a champion of "remuntada" and so far sold over ten million units since 1998. The reason for the gradual redeployment is understandable: to implement massive economies of scale can optimize spending and maximize profits, while offering sophisticated solutions at an affordable price.

System is now global, generalist sought by manufacturers and "premium", which is more effective and profitable to grow the segment. Gaetano Thorel, President and CEO of Ford Italy, admits that this method will make the brand more transverse and less "Fiesta-centric." The third-generation Focus will benefit from this policy to ensure greater quality than its predecessor.

Just look at the bridge to "measure" the length of the step forward: the plastics are soft and cared for, assemblies excellent, well-designed and rewarding. Some reserve comment until the overcrowded center console (there are too many keys and buttons because it is not very intuitive), although overall the collection is really well done, almost to the upper end.

Convincing even the driving position, hampered only by the elbow-rests fixed center that causes some trouble when changing gear. The seats are comfortable and well shaped, not at all fatiguing even longer in transfers, with multiple configurations to design the most suitable driving position.

The driver can then adjust the seat and steering wheel to create an ideal triangulation, while the shift lever is "staggered" to the right and forced to bend the second arm at an angle rather unnatural. Despite this fact proves the change smooth and accurate, with grafts contained well-spaced and hiking.

Also applies the clutch, too smooth, while the steering (the steering wheel just four races and small diameter) proves accurate, sincere and emphasizes the remarkable quality maps. While waiting for the new media engines "bestseller", with power and lower operating costs, the Ford Focus was introduced in conjunction with the EcoBoost 1.6 units from 2.0 TDCi 182 bhp and 163 bhp.

The diesel unit demonstrates mushy and easily manageable, even if the 163 hp do not guarantee any sense of sportsmanship: below the 1,700 rpm lacks verve, which runs out rather quickly (over 3,200 rpm it is appropriate to change the report) and thus requires enjoy the large amount without being able to dwell too long with the accelerator.

During our testing we have never approached the declared distance (18.9 km / l), reaching values between 11 and 12 km / l. More enjoyable and versatile unit with petrol, which is also very mellow in delivering the 240 Nm of torque even at lower regimes. The throttle response is obliterated after the 4,000 rpm limit sufficient to reach very high speeds.

€ 17,250 are required to purchase the new Ford Focus standard equipment and aspirated 1.6 petrol engine with 105 hp. The cheapest diesel starts at € 20,000, while the step between a version and the other are separated by a surcharge of 500, 750, 1,250 and 1,500 €. For all the preparation Titanium is offered at € 1,500 (same number as the Powershift dual-clutch gearbox), while the interesting Assistant Driver Pack (€ 1.25o) provides for the automatic braking system, warning systems and lane-keeping and the system that monitors whether driver fatigue.

The EcoBoost engines 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi will be on sale this fall.
