The issue was already addressed when developing the F430 Spider. "Why not replace the fabric roof with a retractable metal support?". The Ferrari engineers finally opted for the classic soft jump seat, won by the excessive technical complexity required to develop innovative and fascinating idea. Now, almost a decade later, the horse would have overcome the initial difficulties and could equip the 458 Italy with a folding hard-top.
