Toyota: stop planned production for 5 plants in Europe

Toyota Motor Europe has announced that production from five European plants will be interrupted for several days between late April and early May. From the 5th month of the year, production will resume at reduced rates, to better manage the supply of components available in the earthquake which occurred on 11 March 2011 in Japan.

In countries where possible, the interruption was planned to coincide with holiday periods expected shortly. The decision involves the Toyota plant in Burnaston, Adapazari and Onnaing. The measure will also apply to plants that produce engines: Jelcz-Laskowice and one in Deeside, Wales.

The decision was necessary due to anticipation of a possible reduction in the supply of components. "Although most of the components of our cars come from European suppliers - says Didier Leroy, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe - Toyota is having some difficulties in the supply chain because of the internal situation in Japan.

Through this change in European production, we are adapting to the current situation, without interrupting the delivery of vehicles to our customers. "" At the moment - Leroy went on - we have a double objective: to support the recovery of Japan and come back as soon as possible to normality in the European market, to meet the demands of the market, which now appear to be far better than the 2008 financial crisis, thanks to our excellent selection of products.

" Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corporation announced last week that production at Japanese plants will resume April 18 to 27 to 50% of the usual pace.
