During the model year of 2012 V70, XC70 ES80, Volvo introduced the new D3 and D5 diesel engines, refined technology for higher performance and lower power consumption. The restyling includes new body colors and an unusual front headlights, while in terms of security systems has been to introduce City Safety and Pedestrian Detection recently brought to the series debut 60.

With the same drive V70 wagon the needs of the XC70 5.1 to 5.6 l, while in combination with the automatic transmission, power consumption ranging from 6 to 6.8 l/100 km.
The D3 comes from the D5 engine but has a shorter stroke of the pistons, for a total displacement of 2 liters instead of 2.3, and a variable geometry turbocharger in place of sequential twin turbo technology. The efforts of the Swedish engineers focused on the regulation of their charge, in order to improve the handling.
The power and torque remain the same rather than in the past 163 hp and 400 Nm for the Volvo S80 D3 says the same consumption of the more powerful D5 and similar values for V70 and XC70. For both engines the changes have involved reducing the weight of camshaft and connecting rods for greater responsiveness and fuel economy.
Further action will the vacuum pump and the chain drive for the oil pump. In addition, all versions with manual transmission are now combined with the Stop & Start, which provides for zero fuel consumption at a standstill. For all engines is also available automatic transmission, also with six speeds, coupled also with Start & Stop the autumn, but only when the engine D3.
Even the smallest Drive 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine has been updated to meet the Euro 5 and a maximum power of 115 hp compared with 270 Nm of torque. In this case the emission of carbon dioxide in the environment, stood at 119g/km.
